Emotional songs stay with me over time. LECOMTE DE BRÉGEOT
Lecomte de Brégeot, the pseudonym for Yannick Lecomte, is a Lyon-based French producer and DJ, who has been making music since the raves of his teenage years. Some of his work has been heard in the Netflix guilty-pleasure hit Emily in Paris, performed by RuPaul’s Drag Race season 7 winner American drag queen Violet Chachki, and featured by a number of major fashion and beauty brands. Here, in this Q&A and video, he discusses his work along with his musical influences and shares a Spotify playlist curated especially for MAKE-IT-UP.

What’s your earliest memory related to music?
I remember when I was a kid, I would spend hours recording a whole bunch of songs on my first tapes. It was a bit more manual and complicated than creating a playlist nowadays, but it was fun. I have two words: pencil rewind.
Has your taste in music changed over the years?
Has it changed fundamentally? No, I would say it has evolved. My roots are still there; however, I try to remain open to the maximum through my listening. I have always bathed in a broad musical culture, even if my ears are set more attentively on electronic , rock, and pop music. For a few years now, classical music and jazz have been taking a significant place in my playlist, which wasn’t the case before. That’s the beauty of musical diversity, there is always something new to discover.
What is your favorite song sung in a language you don’t speak?
It’s hard to choose just one, but I have fallen in love recently with "Aquarela Do Brasil" by Gal Costa and "Na Dnye" («На дне») by Molchat Doma. I have had a special connection for a few years with Brazil and Slavic influences, which are on two opposite sides of the world. I have done a couple of collaborations in both areas, and I have a lot of friends in Ukraine and in Russia. I was supposed to go on a tour in both countries in 2022. I’m wishing for better days to come for everyone over there. Things are still in the works, but I might be in Brazil for a few gigs this coming autumn.
Can you name three songs in French that you like?
Kid Francescoli — Les vitrines. Slove — Ce soir je m’en vais (feat. Maud Geffray). I’m also in love with the work of my friend Chien Noir — Histoire Vraie.
IS THERE A SONG THAT MAKES YOU EMOTIONAL?
There are quite a lot actually. To pick just a few, I would go for «Comfortably Numb» by Echoes, and «Wish You Were Here» or «Time» by Pink Floyd. Also it’s impossible to count how many songs by the Beatles that make me emotional! Also, I’d have to go with «Unravel» by Bjork and «How Does it Make You Feel» by Air. Emotional songs are the only ones that stay with me over time.
How would you describe the playlist in a couple of sentences?
Definitely a playlist that I am bringing with me everywhere is an eclectic selection between electronic music, rock, pop, and new wave from the mid 60s to nowadays. Some of these songs have triggered my inspiration, and they draw well from the influences which have accompanied me these last few years while working in the studio.
